Good food, raised right.

At The Wooly Pig we strive to raise the best possible food that we know how. Our chickens are raised outdoors, in the sunshine with constant access to fresh vegetation and yummy grubs.

The Results Are:

  • Happy birds.
  • More productive land.
  • Meat that is healthier and much more delicious for our family and our customers.

Unlike many other pastured birds out on the market today, our birds are fed only organic feed, a big added cost for us that we feel is a worthwhile investment in our customers health. Pesticides in non-organic animal feeds can be substantial and the vast majority of ingredients used are genetically modified. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. Our organic feed is GMO free which benefits not only the health of our birds, but our customers as well.

What is the difference between Free Range and Pastured?

With so many different types of labels present in our markets today, eating with a conscious can be difficult. Don't be fooled. The differences between these terms are HUGE! Often when people think of Free Range, they imagine an un-fenced bird happily hunting and pecking in the grass. Sadly, this is not so. The guidelines for the term Free Range only require that the animals have access to the outdoors, this is often one small door on a single wall of a coop that houses thousands of birds. So when someone purchases poultry products labeled free range there is a good chance the animals have never actually seen the light of day or green grass its entire life. OUR BIRDS are raised outdoors, with constant access to fresh-growing palatable vegetation. In addition, unlike many other pastured birds out on the market today, our birds are fed only organic feed, a big added cost for us that we feel is a worthwhile investment in our customers health. Pesticides in non-organic animal feeds can be substantial and the vast majority of ingredients used are genetically modified. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. GMO crops have pesticides built right into the plants. The plants themselves are toxic, and not just to insects. Farmers in India who let their sheep graze on GM cotton plants after the harvest saw thousands of sheep die. GMO crops also allow for the producer to spray herbicide and pesticide DIRECTLY on the crop. The effects of genetically modified crops on our health has yet to be studied by the FDA, and while they are banned as ingredients in all of Europe and 17 countries elsewhere, the FDA does not require the labeling of GMOs in food ingredient lists. Our organic feed is GMO free which benefits not only the health of our birds, but our customers as well.
